How Does a Trolling Motor Battery Work?
During charging, an external charging device regulates the current through the Battery Management System (BMS), transferring energy into the battery. Lithium ions are released from the cathode material (such as lithium iron phosphate or NCM), migrate through the electrolyte solution or solid-state electrolyte, and embed into the anode (typically graphite or other carbon-based materials). Simultaneously, electrons flow to the anode through an external circuit, maintaining charge balance. As lithium ions continuously embed into the anode, the material’s lattice structure changes to accommodate more lithium ions, allowing the battery to store energy and increase voltage until it reaches the preset full charge voltage.
When the trolling motor is activated, the battery begins discharging. Lithium ions in the negative electrode leave the graphite lattice, migrate back through the electrolyte to the positive electrode, while electrons travel through an external circuit to the motor, powering the electric propulsion system. As a result, the propeller spins, driving the boat forward.
